“If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired.” The quotation is by Anton Čechov. And if a gun appears on a forum?

New technologies constantly crowd our present, and from the moment they are developed we must assume that they will be distributed, tested, and appropriated, and that responsible use cannot always be guaranteed. This work explores the tension between freedom and regulation through the phenomenon of 3D-printed firearms, widely disseminated in the United States and around the world through online communities of enthusiasts.

On Reddit, we found dozens of discussions concerning the manufacture of FMDA pistols (“Free Men Don’t Ask,” the most well-known do-it-yourself handgun model), along with just as many photographs shared by users to document their progress. Using photogrammetry software, we converted one of these photographs into a three-dimensional model. The exhibited project consists of a 3D printer that, over the course of several hours, produces an exact, though harmless, replica of the firearm.
