Riscritti e rimossi (Rewritten and removed) consists of the visual reworking of more than two hundredpreviously unpublished documents written by patients of the former San Servolo psychiatric hospital in Venice. Dating back to the first two decadesof the twentieth century, these writings emerged from medical records during a research project we conducted at the Historical Archive of the Asylum. Mostly unsent letters or letters addressed to hospital staff, these materials constitute non-institutional traces, dissonant viewpoints that, as such, elude the archive’s rigid systems of classification.

For us, these letters function as images. We photographed them in order to preserve their marks, smudges, and handwriting. Selected passages, sentences or single words, were then highlighted in post-production, while the rest of the image was simultaneously lightened. The resulting effect recalls the imperfect erasure of a rubber eraser: what is not highlighted remains nonetheless legible to an attentive eye.

Some textual fragments are reproduced on plastic pouches containing enlarged parametric photographs of the individuals who authored them. The faces remain visible through the empty spaces left by the letters, which are spray-painted in negative, and can be revealed by lifting the plastic, textual layer that acts as a filter between us and the subject’s image. This dialectic between visibility and concealment draws attention to the origin of these photographs: not innocent portraits, but enforced images, produced for diagnostic and surveillance purposes.
