Tutti, almeno una volta, abbiamo preso un foglio di carta, lo abbiamo ripiegato più volte su se stesso e lo abbiamo lanciato davanti a noi. Può un aeroplano di carta sfondare un muro? Al di là del cielo è una video installazione che mette in scena una performance fuori campo; degli aerei di carta vengono lanciati contro un muro di mattoni, sul quale viene proiettata l’immagine di un cielo: non sappiamo da dove vengono e irrimediabilmente si schiantano, precipitano. Al suolo, sotto il frame del video, sono accatastati i loro relitti, accentuando così il dialogo tra ciò che è delimitato dalla proiezione e ciò che esiste fuori da quest’ultima.
L’opera rivisita due dei concetti platonici più noti: il mondo delle idee e il mito della caverna. Protagonista è la mano ignota che esegue il lancio e la sua indefessa perseveranza. Forse, gli aerei di carta sono una rappresentazione di idee in cerca di una loro vita materica, o forse sono proprio quelle pagine bianche sulle quali hanno trovato posto tante bozze e che, per un motivo o per l’altro, vengono gettate via in un continuo ricambio.
Certamente un aeroplano di carta non potrà mai sfondare un muro, eppure restiamo incantati a guardarlo fallire; quando vola ci coglie la meraviglia e ogni volta che la punta bianca tocca la superficie del cielo, in quell’istante dilatato, sentiamo un fremito. Al di là del cielo è l’attesa di un’intuizione che possa sovvertire l’ordine costituito, il brainstorming che anticipa l’azione dell’anima creativa; è lo sconforto quando sembra tutto da buttare, l’irrefrenabile desiderio di andare avanti nonostante tutto.
Everyone, at least once, took a piece of paper, folded it several times, and threw it away. Can a paper plane break down a wall? Al di là del cielo (Beyond the sky) is a video installation that stage an off-screen performance; some paper planes are thrown against a white brick wall, on which an image of the sky is projected. We don’t know where they come from, but inevitably they crash and fall off. Their wracks lay on the ground, under the video frame, emphasizing the dialogue between what takes place inside the projection and what exists outside it. The work re-elaborates two widely known Plato’s concepts: the theory of Ideas and the allegory of the cave.
The main character is the unkown hand who performs the throw and its tireless perseverance. Perhaps, the paper planes ar ethe embodiement of ideas in search of a materic life, or maybe they are those white pages full of drafts and sketches that are constantly thrown away in a continuos cycle. A paper plane can never break down a wall, but we keep watching its failure: when it flies we feel astonished, and every time its tip touches the blue sky, in that expanded moment, we feel a thrill. Al di là del cielo is the waiting for an intuition capable of undermining the established order, the brainstorming before the creative action. It is the discouragement when everything seems lost, the unstoppable will of going on, after all.
