I am always by my side affronta il tema del doppio mettendo in scena una sequenza ritmata di movimenti ed interazioni tra i due performer e le loro controparti in gesso. La progressiva scoperta di sé e dell’altro passa attraverso una presa di coscienza circa la dualità delle esperienze umane, vissute sia in prima persona che da spettatori delle proprie azioni. Chi sono io? Chi è l’altro? Come riusciamo a comunicare? Da queste domande nasce l’idea per una video performance che esplora la natura dei rapporti umani, intensi, seducenti, ambigui.
Il titolo I am always by my side, letteralmente “io sono sempre al mio fianco”, reinterpreta le parole del poeta Arthur Rimbaud: “Io, è un altro”. Un sipario bianco fa da sfondo al percorso amoroso di due giovani, scandito dalla musica elettronica e suddiviso in tre fasi. La prima è quella dell’egoismo, dove ognuno presta attenzione solamente a sé stesso. La seconda è quella dell’apertura, dove si prende confidenza con l’immagine proiettata dall’altro e se ne esplorano i gesti. La terza è quella dell’abbandono, dove si arriva a toccare il corpo vivo dell’altro, continuando però a conservarne anche l’immagine fittizia. Immagine che, inerme e rassicurante, è come un simulacro ideale.
Dalla tradizione antica delle maschere mortuarie, in quanto vere effigi del defunto, deriva l’idea di utilizzare dei calchi in gesso all’interno di I am always by my side. Essi, per sempre incorruttibili, sono i veri protagonisti di quest’opera che mescola temi tradizionali dell’Arte con i nuovi media ed è influenzata dalle performance degli anni ‘70.
I am always by my side deals about the theme of the “double”, staging a rhythmic sequence of movements and interactions between the two performers and their plaster duplicates. The progressive discovery of themselves and the other gets through the realization of the duality of human experiences, lived both in first hand, and then from spectators of its own actions. Who am I? Who is “the other”? How can we communicate? The idea of a video-performance that explore the nature of human relations – full of passion, charming, ambiguity – was indeed born from these questions.
The title I am always by my side, reinterprets the famous words from the poet Arthur Rimbaud: “Myself, is someone else”. A white curtain is the background of the amorous path of two young people; their travel is marked by electronic music and divided in three steps. First comes the egoism, when everyone pays attention only to the self. Then comes the opening to the other: in this moment lovers become more familiar with the projected images of the other, they explore their ways and gestures. At the end, the real, intimate relationship is fulfilled in the bodies’ physical contact, but also the fictional images are preserved as an ideal simulacrum.
The idea of the plaster statues used inside the video comes from the ancient tradition of funeral masks, intended as the true effigies of the dead. Those statues, forever immutable, are the main actors on the stage. This artwork mixes traditional themes of Art with new media and takes influence from the art performances of the ‘70s.
