Spoken bird è un documentario sperimentale che esplora la relazione tra umani e animali nella cornice data dalla pratica del birdwatching.
Il film ritrae Emanuele, un birdwatcher esperto, durante un’escursione nei pressi dell’aeroporto Marco Polo di Venezia. Una voce commenta le immagini: è la voce degli uccelli, che, citando Aristofane, si domandano se quel luogo sia la città utopica di Nubicuculia, a metà strada tra il cielo e la terra, dove umani e uccelli convivono e celebrano la loro alleanza.
Tra coabitazione e colonizzazione, lo sguardo umano incontra punti di vista non antropocentrici, in un documentario a ruoli invertiti dove l’uomo si mostra e l’animale parla. Sono frequenti i rimandi alla serie di videogiochi Pokémon, ironico parallelo della pratica del birdwatching e simbolo di una natura artificiale che nell’aeroporto trova il suo habitat.
Qui, dove il rumore è assordante e dove volatili e velivoli costantemente si confondono, sorge un interrogativo: come sarebbe un mondo senza animali?
Spoken bird is an experimental documentary that explores the relationship between humans and animals in the frame given by the practice of birdwatching.
The film portrays Emanuele, an expert birdwatcher, during an excursion near Venice’s Marco Polo airport. A voiceover comments on the images: it is the voice of the birds, which wonder if that place is the utopian city of Nubicuculia (quoting Aristophanes), halfway between heaven and earth, where humans and birds coexist and celebrate their alliance.
Between cohabitation and colonization, the human gaze meets non anthropocentric points of view, in a documentary with inverted roles, where man shows himself and the animal speaks.
There are frequent references to the Pokémon video game series, an ironic parallel to the practice of birdwatching and a symbol of an artificial nature that finds its habitat in the airport. Here, where the noise is deafening and where birds and aircraft are constantly confused, a question arises: what would a world without animals look like?
